The Letter I

Day 1

Goals: Learn the letter I. Be able to recognize it on the paper. Be able to say at least one thing that starts with the letter I.

Color sheets: Capital Letter "I", Lowercase "i", Ii is for Ice, Ii is for Iguana, Insects (just pick which one you like)

Craft: Igloo
Directions: Ideally you would use sugar cubes, but our store did not have them so we used large marshmallows, some white and some shaped like hearts.  After we had finished ours I found the link I attached to this project.  Arrange them on a plate and them glue them together  Talk about the letter I, what an igloo is and who lives in them:

Song: I says "i" (same tune.  See this post and watch video for melody.)

Shapes:  Ovals (goes with making an igloo.  Talk about how the shape of the igloo is an oval)

Day 2

Goals: Recall the sound "I" makes. Find "I" on papers.

Color Sheets: Sesame Street "I", Ii is for ice cream, Ii is for igloo

Tracing Skills Sheet: Diagonal Lines
These will be repeats for a little bit.  Kids need to do the same movemement over and over again to build the skills needed to write.

Computer Skills: Starfall "I", Bembo's Zoo (choose the letter I)

Snack/Lunch: Ice cream in a bag!
Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk or half & half
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 6 tablespoons rock salt
  • 1 pint-size plastic food storage bag (e.g., Ziploc)
  • 1 gallon-size plastic food storage bag
  • Ice cubes

Directions:
  1. Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt. Seal the bag.
  2. Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it.
  3. Place the small bag inside the large one, and seal it again carefully.
  4. Shake until the mixture is ice cream, which takes about 5 minutes.
  5. Wipe off the top of the small bag, then open it carefully. Enjoy!
Tips:  A 1/2 cup milk will make about 1 scoop of ice cream, so double the recipe if you want more. But don't increase the proportions more that that -- a large amount might be too big for kids to pick-up because the ice itself is heavy.

Color Green Sheet  - Look for the iguana and write the letter I next to it.
